Building on the success of multiple projects for Facebook, Level 10 was selected by the the Silicon Valley tech giant to build a second signature project—MPK 21—at Facebook’s headquarters in Menlo Park. While MPK 20 was a large, fast-track—433,000 sq. ft. in 21 months—MPK 21 is even bigger and faster—524,000 sq. ft. in 17 months. Designed by architect Frank Gehry, both projects are highly technical, with complicated green roofs that span the building length for 9 acres and contain hundreds of mature oaks and native plants. Adding to the complexity of both projects, was the requirement to entirely 3D model the buildings prior to construction. Level 10 has adeptly implemented Gehry Partners’ proprietary 3D system on both projects. When complete, MPK 21 will connect to MPK 20, as well as contain a bridge from the structure to hiking trails across the highway and along the habitat-sensitive wetlands.

How I Raised $30 Million From Sequoia Venture Capital told by the founder of Drift.com. Many wannabe entrepreneurs struggle with how to raise money, find investors, get started? Well, watch this and find out what the top Venture Capital firm in the world - Sequoia looked for before they supplied $30 Million to this startup founder. Sequoia was founded by Don Valentine in 1972[7] in Menlo Park, California. In the mid-1990s, Valentine gave control of the company to Doug Leone and Michael Moritz.[3] In 1999, Sequoia expanded its operations to Israel.[8] Sequoia Capital China was established in 2005 as an affiliate to the U.S. firm.[9] In 2006, Sequoia Capital acquired Westbridge Capital Partners, an Indian venture capital firm. It later was renamed Sequoia Capital India.[10] CB Insights recognized Sequoia Capital as the number one venture capital firm in 2013.[11] The U.S. firm had 11 partners as of 2016.[12] In 2015, Sequoia drew criticism[13][14] after Moritz responded to questions about why the U.S. firm had never had a female investing partner by saying Sequoia was looking for women to hire, but "[w]hat we’re not prepared to do is to lower our standards."[15] Members of the media, technology and investment communities criticized the statements as suggesting "smart, driven, capable young women interested in working in technology...don’t exist."[16] Moritz subsequently issued a statement saying, "I know there are many remarkable women who would flourish in the venture business" and said the firm was working to find them.[17] In 2016, Sequoia hired Polyvore CEO Jess Lee, 33, as an investing partner, making her Sequoia's first female investing partner[18] as well as one of its youngest partners.[12]

New platforms and applications are entering the workforce — Chatbots have arrived. With the capacity to understand human language, gestures, and intentions, these digital assistants have the potential to disrupt the delivery of the customer experience while collecting enormous amounts of personal data. Many companies are creating platforms and apps to capture a share of a market that is expected to exceed $600 billion in revenue by 2020. Both startups and established companies — like IBM, Facebook, and Slack — are already dominant players and are developing applications that will change the customer experience in finance, healthcare, and travel, to name a few. Who will emerge as the dominant players? What types of jobs will be “outsourced to this new digital workforce? Will adequate consumer protections be adopted?

Abstract for talk: • my history and background • how and why we had to re write the shell • why I wrote my own memory management • key language design decisions • where those ideas came from • what was hard to get right • system changes we made to accommodate sh • what the rules were in UNIX group • what would I do differently today Background: Steve Bourne is computer scientist who is internationally known for his work on the UNIX operating system. While at Bell Laboratories, Steve designed the UNIX Command Language known as the "Bourne Shell". It is the standard command line interface to UNIX and is widely used today in scripting in the UNIX programming environment. Steve has a Bachelor's degree in mathematics from King's College London, England. He has a Diploma (or Master's degree) in Computer Science and a Ph.D. in mathematics from Trinity College, Cambridge. While at the University of Cambridge Computer Laboratory he worked on an ALGOL 68 compiler and CAMAL an early algebra system. After Cambridge, Steve spent nine years at Bell Labs with the Seventh Edition Unix team. As well as the Bourne shell, he wrote the adb debugger and published /The UNIX System/, the second book on the UNIX system, intended for a general readership. This book is recognized as a text for the effective use of UNIX. After Bell Labs, he spent 20 years in senior engineering management positions. At Cisco Systems, he was director of engineering for enterprise network management; at Sun Microsystems, he managed the Solaris 2.0 program; at Digital Equipment Corporation, he developed DEC's first RISC-based workstation; and at Silicon Graphics, he was Director of Software Engineering responsible for the introduction of the IRIS, the company's first graphics workstation. From 2000 to 2002 he was President of the Association for Computing Machinery. For his work on computing he was made a Fellow of the ACM in 2005. He is also a Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society. At present Steve is chief technology officer at Rally Venture Partners, a Menlo Park-based venture capital group in California. He is also the chair of the Editorial Advisory Board for /ACM Queue/, a magazine he started when he was President of the ACM.
